Portman Calls on Senate to Pass the Senior Tax Hike Prevention Act

COLUMBUS, OH – U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH), AARP leaders and seniors joined together today to highlight the rising cost of health care for seniors and Portman’s bipartisan legislation – the Senior Tax Hike Prevention Act – to address this issue. Portman’s bipartisan legislation, which was introduced with Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and endorsed by the AARP, will help seniors with rising health care costs by preventing an increase in the threshold to claim the medical expense tax deduction for seniors. The current rate of 7.5 percent of income is scheduled to increase to 10 percent for seniors on December 31, 2016.  Portman issued the following statement:

“This issue is not about numbers or taxes, it’s about our seniors and their health care and their ability to make ends meet.  So many seniors live on fixed incomes and are struggling with higher costs, especially health care, and this bipartisan measure will address this issue and make a difference for them.  The Senate should pass this bill, and I look forward to continuing to work with Senator Brown and the AARP to help make that happen.”
