Senate Auto Caucus Chairs Portman, Levin Call on TPA Bill to Include Strong Currency Provisions
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Carl Levin (D-Michigan), chairs of the Senate Auto Caucus, released the following statement about the importance of including strong and enforceable currency provisions in the forthcoming Trade Promotion Authority bill:
“U.S. auto exports support American jobs, and it is important that U.S. workers operate on a level playing field with their global competitors,” said Portman and Levin. “Fair currency policies are central to a level playing field, as they ensure that no one gets an unfair advantage in the global market. As the Senate prepares to debate Trade Promotion Authority, we strongly support the inclusion of provisions to discourage currency manipulation that hurts U.S. manufacturers and auto workers.”
In September, Portman and Levin signed a letter with 58 of their Senate colleagues to the U.S. Trade Representative and Secretary of the Treasury calling for “strong and enforceable” currency disciplines to be included in trade agreements.
Portman and Levin chair the Senate Auto Caucus, which provides a forum to exchange ideas and influence policy on issues affecting America’s auto industry, such as trade, transportation and technology.
