Portman Says Jobs Report Good News for Our Economy, Businesses & Workers
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) praised the Labor Department’s December 2018 jobs report showing solid job gains, strong wage growth, and more Americans re-entering the workforce:
“Today’s jobs report is good news for our economy, for businesses large and small, and for our workers in Ohio and around the country. Not only did our economy add 312,000 jobs in December, but the labor force expanded by 419,000 people, and wage growth for private sector employees rose to 3.2 percent over the year. For 2018, monthly job growth averaged 220,000 new jobs, more than double the pre-tax reform baseline projection by the Congressional Budget Office, which estimated an average growth of only 107,000 jobs per month. This report serves as encouraging evidence that tax reform and other pro-growth policies enacted in the 115th Congress are helping create an environment where job creation and wage growth can thrive.
“Of course, we have much more work ahead of us to address pending threats to our long-term economic growth, including inequities in our economic relationship with China, uncertainty in international trade, a labor force participation rate that is still too low, and a skills gap that must be closed so workers can gain the skills they need for today’s jobs. I’m committed to working with my colleagues in a bipartisan way to move our country forward.”
