Portman Concerned With Mixed Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Rob Portman released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported the unemployment fell to 9 percent while our economy added only 36,000 jobs during the month of January:
“Our economic recovery has remained frustratingly slow because of big-government policies like the health care law. As I travel Ohio, small business leaders and employees tell me they’re facing too many uncertainties, anywhere from tax increases to restrictive government mandates, which is making it harder for Ohio companies to bring on new workers,” said Portman.
While the unemployment rate dropped to 9 percent, the economy only added 36,000 new jobs. These numbers reflect an economic recovery that is still disappointedly slow in providing new jobs.
“Our monthly payroll number continues to be below expectations and small businesses, entrepreneurs and companies won’t begin serious hiring, the kind we need to get out of this economy, until they know that Washington is stepping aside.”
