WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) today applauded the U.S. House of Representative’s passage of a bill he and Sen. Brown (D-OH) introduced to rename the U.S. Postal Service office on Tallmadge Road in Rootstown after Portage County Marine Jeremy Murray. Sergeant Murray, a native of Rootstown, was on his third tour of duty abroad when he was killed in Iraq in November 2005. Murray's mother is a longtime employee of the Tallmadge Road facility.

“I was pleased to see the overwhelming support in the House for our effort to honor Marine Corps Sergeant Jeremy Murray.  We’re now one step closer to preserving his legacy as one of Ohio’s true heroes,” said Senator Portman.

Sergeant Murray was awarded the Purple Heart, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and a Gold Star for heroic achievement in Iraq.  He is survived by his wife Megan, his son Ian, and his parents, Pam and Harold Murray.  Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-17) introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives, where the bill currently awaits action from the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

The bill, which passed the U.S. Senate unanimously last May, now awaits President Obama’s signature.
