Portman Announces More Than $1.4 Million in U.S. Department of Agriculture Grants for Rural Development Across Ohio
CINCINNATI, OH –Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) applauded the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for awarding more than $1.4 million in grants to communities in Ohio for rural development. These grants will help these Ohio communities build and improve critical facilities. According to the USDA, the Ohio grant recipients can use the funding to build or upgrade a wide-range of rural community facilities such as schools, libraries, clinics and public safety facilities. The entities and grant amounts can be found below.
“I’m pleased that Secretary Perdue has awarded more than $1.4 million in federal funding to help rural development across Ohio. These funds will help these communities upgrade and build critical community facilities such as schools, libraries, and public safety vehicles,” said Portman. “I’ll continue to work at the federal level to make ensure rural areas in Ohio have the resources they need in order to continue to effectively serve their residents.”

This Rural Development investment will be used to acquire two new law enforcement vehicles to serve a community that generates nearly 2,000 calls each year.

This Rural Development investment will enable the village to acquire a new fire engine. The town recorded about 400 runs last year. The engine will replace an outdated one.

Village of Barnesville |

This Rural Development investment will be used to purchase an ambulance and associated equipment for use by the Village of Barnesville Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Services Department. Barnesville EMS also provides coverage for Warren and Kirkwood Townships, along with portions of Flushing, Goshen and Wayne Townships. Last year alone, the organization responded to 950 calls encompassing an 80+-square mile service area. This new ambulance will replace an older, no longer serviceable model that has reached the end of its useful life.

This Rural Development investment will be used to finance the purchase of an excavator which will be used in numerous trenching, foundational, and material handling projects in Appalachian Belmont County. This new excavator will replace an older model that has outlived its useful life. Previous collaborations between USDA Rural Development and Belmont County include more than $84 million in water and wastewater treatment program funding.

This Rural Development investment will be used to purchase a 5-ton dump truck for use by maintenance employees of Loudon Township in the southeast corner of Carroll County. Previously, the township borrowed or leased dump trucks in order to complete road work. This purchase will allow workers to operate more efficiently in service to township residents.

This Rural Development investment will be used to fund the acquisition of a new dump truck with snowplow and salt spreader attachments, along with a new mower, for Brush Creek Township in Jefferson County. Brush Creek maintains nearly 45 miles of road, and has been using equipment that has reached the end of its serviceable life.

This Rural Development investment will be used to obtain a fire engine, ambulance and pickup truck. The equipment will replace outdated emergency gear.

This Rural Development investment will be used to purchase two dump trucks outfitted for road maintenance and snow removal. These trucks, which will help maintain nearly 310 miles of Monroe County roadways, are replacing older models which have reached the end of their serviceable lives.

This Rural Development investment will be used to fund a dump truck and backhoe for Benton Township in Monroe County. This equipment will replace older, no longer serviceable models, and will support maintenance of nearly 34 miles of rural roads.

This Rural Development investment will be used to finance the acquisition of a new pumper tanker. Last year alone, this volunteer department made 338 runs. With this new pumper tanker, firefighters will be able to provide improved fire safety to the residents of the service area, which includes Blooming Grove and Cass Townships along with the village of Shiloh. Previously, CB&S Joint Fire District received $87,000 in USDA Rural Development Community Facilities assistance to purchase an emergency vehicle.

Ohio Hills Health Services |

This Rural Development investment will be used to help complete construction of a 12,000-square foot building which will house Ohio Hills Health Services' Monroe Family Health Center (MFHC). Last year alone, MFHC, which uses a sliding scale payment model based on income and ability to pay, provided healthcare services to 3,500 rural residents at its Woodsfield-based site. The new building will replace an accessibility-challenged, inadequately-sized facility, allowing MFHC to expand services and reach even more rural residents in need. In addition to $2,265,000 in previous funding for this project, USDA Rural Development also is providing $389,700 in funds to help offset the cost of new clinic equipment.

This Rural Development investment will be used to acquire a fire truck for the Carrollton Fire Department. This unit will replace an older model which is at the end of its useful life. The station's 40 volunteer firefighters and first responders will be able to provide improved services to the residents of Carrollton. Previous collaborations with USDA Rural Development included $50,000 in Community Facilities funding to help offset the purchase of law-enforcement vehicles.

This Rural Development investment will be used to fund the acquisition of a new skid steer to support the Village of Woodsfield Water & Sewer Departments in Monroe County. The Woodsfield Water Department provides more than 1,200 rural customers an average of 350,000 gallons of safe, potable water each day. Concurrently, nearly 400,000 gallons of wastewater per day is treated by the sewer department.

This Rural Development investment will be used to purchase a dump truck with snowplow attachment for use by Deerfield Township in Appalachian Morgan County. The Township currently maintains its roads with a truck that's approaching the end of its useful life.

Salem Township - Tuscarawas County |

This Rural Development investment will be used to purchase a tractor with mower along with a tandem roller to help maintain more than 36 miles of Appalachian roads. The tractor and mower will replace older, no longer serviceable, models and the tandem roller will help township maintenance workers properly and safely compact road surfaces. Earlier collaborations with Salem Township included $165,000 in USDA Rural Development Community Facilities loan and grant funding, also used for equipment purchase.

This Rural Development investment will be used to purchase four dump trucks to help maintain rural Appalachian Pike County roads, many of which are hilly and steep. The equipment will replace older, no longer serviceable units. With the ongoing decontamination and decommissioning of the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, rural manufacturing and farming now comprise the largest share of employment in Pike County. Properly graded, navigable roads are especially important to keeping the local economy in motion. |
