In Eaton, Portman Calls Recovery Home for Women "A Model Facility
Today, Senator Portman visited the Sojourner Recovery Services residential women’s facility in Eaton, Ohio. Sojourner’s Eaton facility opened last year and serves as a comprehensive drug and alcohol addiction and mental health service provider. Portman toured the facility and met with courageous women working to get their lives back on track as well as those on the front lines helping them overcome their addictions.
Following the visit, Portman discussed the great work being done at this new facility in Eaton. A transcript can be found below and you can watch the video here.
“This new drug coming into the area which is fentanyl, which is a synthetic heroin, and that is causing not just more overdoses but more deaths per overdose. So despite the great work of the first responders trying to save people’s lives, we’re seeing a real crisis. We’ve never seen anything like this in this country. We have a bigger drug epidemic now than ever before. I was out here to see how you get from addiction, to recovery, to back to your life again – back to your family and back to work. And we need to replicate what’s going on here all around our state. This is really a model facility.”
Senator Portman, who is the author of the recently signed-into-law and bipartisan Comprehensive Addiction & Recovery Act (CARA), has helped lead the national effort to combat this epidemic that is devastating communities across Ohio and our country. He continues to tour the state meeting with those in recovery and those on the front lines dealing with this epidemic, including meeting with women in recovery at the Leadership, Compassion, Awareness, Dedication & Advocacy (LCADA) Way Women’s Center in Lorain, the Edna House in Cleveland, the Erin Helms Recovery Home in Lakewood, the Bassett House outside of Athens, and the Adena Pregnancy Center in Chillicothe. Portman is also the author of the bipartisan Synthetics Trafficking & Overdose Prevention (STOP) Act, legislation designed to help stop dangerous synthetic drugs like fentanyl and carfentanil from being shipped through our borders into the United States.
