In Dayton, Portman Participates in NASIC Intelligence Production Center's III Groundbreaking Event
Portman Fought to Ensure Funding for Expansion in Defense Funding Measures
DAYTON, OH – Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) participated in the groundbreaking ceremony of an expansion for the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC), which is located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This groundbreaking ceremony was for the Intelligence Production Complex, a 250,000 square foot, five-story building with room for over 900 employees that will modernize NASIC’s facilities.
Portman has worked hard to ensure that the funding for NASIC’s main campus needs are met through the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Last year, the fiscal year 2020 NDAA conference report included $120.9 million in funding to upgrade NASIC, which is funding the expansion celebrated today. The expansion will provide much-needed secure spaces that meet the demands of the growing workforce and the associated information technology requirements of modern facilities.
"Today, I was proud to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for NASIC's Intelligence Production Center III after successfully ensuring NASIC received the necessary resources through the defense funding bill last year," said Portman. "I enjoyed visiting the Base again and safely meeting with the men and women serving in the National Air and Space Intelligence Center. NASIC plays a critical role in helping the leadership of our country understand foreign threats to U.S. air and space operations and deserves the modern facilities being built which will be better suited to their important work.”
NOTE: In September of 2019, Portman sent a letter with Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) to the NDAA conferees, urging them to include the remaining $120.9 million to finish the NASIC project in the final conference report. In August of 2019, Portman visited Wright-Patt and met with Air Force leadership who oversee NASIC and the F-35 Hybrid Product Support Integrator. The Senate-passed FY 2021 NDAA includes $35 million for an Energy Resilience and Conservation Investment Program (ERCIP) project at Wright-Patt to help make NASIC more energy-efficient.
