On Fox Business, Portman Highlights President Trump’s Economic Record & Applauds SCOTUS Nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett

September 29, 2020 | Portman Difference

Today, on Fox Business’s After the Bell, Senator Portman highlighted the economic accomplishments of President Trump. Before the coronavirus pandemic devastated the economy, the United States was experiencing unprecedented economic growth with continual wage increases for more than a year and a half and unemployment rates at a historic low across the country. We’ve seen progress in rebuilding our economy in recent months and Portman believes President Trump will continue to help restore the American economy in the months and years ahead.

Portman also discussed the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and her impressive credentials. Portman noted that he hoped her confirmation process would be thorough and fair and looks forward to the opportunity to sit down with Judge Barrett, one-on-one, as part of the evaluation process by the Senate.

Excerpts of the interview can be found below and a video can be found here.

PORTMAN ON PRESIDENT TRUMP’S ECONOMIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS

“President Trump’s been [in office] briefly, and in that time, managed to take the economy from really the doldrums -- it was really a flat economy -- to one of the best economies we’ve had in generations, and if you think about it, as recently as February, we had 19 straight months of wage increases of three percent or more, most of that benefit going to lower middle income workers. Exactly what you want to see. We had unemployment at historic lows for many groups, including women, Blacks, Hispanics. So we had a lot of great things going and we can get back to that again.”

PORTMAN ON U.S. SUPREME COURT JUSTICE NOMINEE JUDGE AMY CONEY BARRETT

“I think it will probably end up working out that she is voted on before the election, but there will be a thorough and fair process, and there should be, and there is time for that. My understanding is she is meeting with senators right now. I have requested a meeting. I’ve been told that’s going to happen. I’m not sure when, but it will happen in the next few weeks. And then she will also have the opportunity to go through at least four days, I’m told, at the Judiciary Committee, where members will have plenty of time to raise their concerns, ask questions, and she will have a chance to explain who she is. So far she looks like a very impressive candidate.”
