Senator Portman and Ohio Aerospace & Aviation Council Host Ohio Aerospace Jobs and Technology Summit
Industry and government leaders gather to discuss future of aerospace industry and Ohio job growth opportunities
Cincinnati, OH — April 4, 2012— U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), along with the Ohio Aerospace & Aviation Council, hosted a summit today on the future of the aerospace industry in Ohio at the GE Aviation Learning Center in Evendale. Portman, a strong advocate for the aerospace and aviation industry in Ohio, organized the event with Council to have a strategic discussion about the growth opportunities these trades present for the state. Key industry leaders were in attendance.
“With existing institutions like Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Air Force Research Laboratories, NASA Glenn Research Center, our great colleges and universities, and the countless aerospace suppliers around the state, Ohio is well positioned to capitalize on the expected growth in the aerospace arena, creating thousands of jobs and continuing Ohio’s heritage of excellence in the field of aerospace and aviation,” said Senator Rob Portman.
Attendees viewed presentations from Stan Deal, Boeing Vice President & General Manager of Supply Chain Management and Operations, David Joyce, GE Aviation President & CEO, and heard from industry and government leaders on aero propulsion, the next generation air transportation system (NextGen), aeronautics technologies, and unmanned aircraft systems. The most talked about area for growth is in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), a key area of expertise in the state.
“This is a great opportunity for Ohio to hear from key leaders on the direction the aerospace industry is going, and it’s a great way for companies that don’t have a presence here to see some of what Ohio has to offer. Segments of the aerospace industry have been predicted to increase at rates between 150 percent and 300 percent greater than that of the national economy, and Ohio is positioned to continue be a leader in that growth,” said Joe Zeis, Chairman of the Ohio Aerospace and Aviation Council.
Speakers at the summit include Dr. Dale Carlson, Manager of Advanced Programs for GE Aviation - Advanced Technology and Preliminary Design, Monte Belger, Vice President of Industry Relations, Metron Aviation, Rich Efford, Assistant Vice President of Legislative Affairs at Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), Dr. Ramon Lugo, Director of NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC), Joe Sciabica, Executive Director of Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL), Mark Kvamme - Chief Investment Officer and President of JobsOhio, and Joe Zeis, Chair of the Ohio Aerospace & Aviation Council that is hosting the event with Senator Portman.
